What Is Refresh Rate?

Refresh rate is the number of times your display updates its image each second. A 60Hz monitor refreshes up to 60 times per second, while a 144Hz display can update up to 144 times. Higher rates usually make scrolling, cursor movement and games look smoother.

Refresh rate is not the same as game FPS. Hz is a display capability; FPS is the number of frames produced by an application. Measure rendered frames with our browser FPS test.

How to Get an Accurate Result

Keep this tab visible, close unnecessary tabs, disable battery-saving modes and let the test run for at least 10 seconds. Browsers reduce animation speed in background tabs, so switching away can produce a misleading result.

If a 144Hz or 240Hz monitor reports approximately 60Hz, check the operating system display setting, cable and port, GPU driver, browser hardware acceleration and laptop power mode.

Common Refresh Rates Explained

60Hz is standard for general use. 90Hz and 120Hz are common on phones and laptops. 144Hz and 165Hz target PC gaming, while 240Hz and 360Hz are designed mainly for competitive play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my 144Hz monitor showing 60Hz?

The display may still be configured to 60Hz in Windows or macOS. A cable, adapter, port limitation, battery mode or outdated graphics driver can also cap the active refresh rate.

Can a browser detect monitor refresh rate?

A browser can estimate the active refresh rate by measuring animation frame timing. Results are most reliable when the tab is visible and the system is not under heavy load.

Is 165Hz noticeably better than 144Hz?

The difference is small compared with the jump from 60Hz to 144Hz. Panel response time and frame consistency also affect perceived smoothness.
