Game Library
This is the biggest issue. The vast majority of major game releases target Windows. Some come to macOS eventually, many never do. GPU Performance Ceiling
Apple's integrated GPUs are excellent for their power envelope, but they cannot match a high-end dedicated GPU. An M3 Max is fast for integrated graphics, but an NVIDIA RTX 4080 or 4090 in a PC will produce substantially higher frame rates in demanding titles. Older and Indie Games
The macOS game library is strongest in indie games, emulation, and titles that are not at the bleeding edge of graphical demand. These games often run beautifully on Apple Silicon, with frame rates well above 60 FPS.
Cross-Platform Workflows
For users whose primary work is creative or professional and who game as a secondary activity, a Mac can deliver enough performance to enjoy games without owning a separate machine. The convenience of a single device often outweighs raw frame rate superiority.
How to Test FPS on macOS
Testing frame rate on a Mac works much like on Windows. Browser-based tests, including ours, run identically and use the same requestAnimationFrame mechanism.
A few macOS-specific notes:
- Check your refresh rate in System Settings → Displays → Refresh Rate. ProMotion MacBook Pro models default to a variable refresh rate that can reach 120Hz. External displays need to be selected individually.
- Safari vs Chrome. Safari is generally the best-optimized browser on macOS and often delivers the highest and most consistent frame rates. Chrome and other Chromium browsers are close behind.
- Battery vs plugged in. macOS reduces performance on battery to extend runtime. For accurate maximum-performance testing, plug in the charger and set Energy Mode to High Power in System Settings → Battery.
