It is designed to run spreadsheets, web servers, video editors, and games reasonably well, which means it is not optimized for any one of them out of the box. If you want the highest and most stable frame rates your hardware can deliver, a few targeted tweaks to Windows itself can make a real difference. This guide walks through the most effective optimizations, in order of impact, so you can stop guessing and start measuring.

Start With a Baseline

Before changing anything, find out where you stand. Run an FPS test and note the result, then play your target game for ten minutes with an overlay enabled to capture average FPS, 1% lows, and frame times. Write these numbers down. After each change below, re-test and compare. This is the only way to know whether a tweak actually helped.

1. Enable Game Mode

Windows includes a built-in Game Mode that prioritizes gaming processes and suspends certain background activities. It is a one-click setting that costs nothing.

Open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode and set it to On. This is the single highest-impact Windows-level change for most users, and it is safe to leave enabled permanently.

2. Set Power Plan to High Performance

Windows defaults to a Balanced power plan that aggressively reduces CPU and GPU clock speeds to save energy. For gaming, this is counterproductive.

Open Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and select Best performance. On older versions of Windows, open the Control Panel → Power Options and choose the High Performance or Ultimate Performance plan.

The trade-off is higher power consumption and slightly more heat, which is fine for a desktop and usually acceptable for a plugged-in laptop. Avoid this setting on battery if you care about runtime.

3. Update Graphics Drivers

GPU manufacturers release drivers tuned for new games, and older drivers often contain bugs that cause stutters or crashes. Both NVIDIA and AMD offer tools that make updates easy.

  • NVIDIA: Use GeForce Experience or the NVIDIA App to install the latest Game Ready driver.
  • AMD: Use Adrenalin to install the latest driver.
  • Intel Arc: Use the Intel Arc Control app.

Choose the "clean install" or "factory reset" option if you have been upgrading over many versions, as leftover files can occasionally cause issues.

4. Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling

Modern Windows versions support Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS), which offloads memory management tasks from the CPU to the GPU. This can reduce frame time variance and improve FPS in CPU-bound scenarios.

Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings, and enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. A restart is required.

5. Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs

Many applications configure themselves to launch at startup and run continuously in the background. Each one consumes CPU, memory, and sometimes GPU resources that your games need.

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), switch to the Startup tab, and disable anything you do not need running constantly — chat clients, updaters, launchers for games you are not currently playing. You can still launch these apps manually when you need them.

6. Pause Windows Update During Sessions

Windows Update can start downloading and installing updates in the background, which produces unexplained stutters and disk activity. Use the "Pause updates" feature (Settings → Windows Update → Pause updates) before a gaming session, or set your active hours so updates happen when you are not using the PC.

Do not disable Windows Update entirely. Security updates matter. Just control when they run.

7. Disable Background Apps and Services

Windows runs many background services that are unnecessary during gameplay. You can safely disable or pause the following while gaming:

  • Cloud sync clients (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive) — they scan and upload files in the background
  • Browser tabs, especially media-heavy ones — close your browser or use a tab suspender
  • Communication apps you are not actively using
  • RGB control software, which can be surprisingly resource-hungry

For deeper control, utilities like Autoruns (from Microsoft Sysinternals) show every service and scheduled task on your system, but be cautious — disabling the wrong service can break functionality.

8. Adjust Visual Effects

Windows includes many animations and visual effects that consume a small amount of GPU time. Disabling them frees up that time for your games.

Open Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings → Performance → Settings, and choose Adjust for best performance. You can re-enable specific effects like font smoothing if the UI feels too stark.

The FPS gain is usually small, but it is free and consistent.

9. Configure Your Display Refresh Rate

Windows does not always use your monitor's maximum refresh rate by default, especially after a driver update or when multiple monitors are connected.

Open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display, and under Choose a refresh rate, select the highest available value. A 144Hz monitor running at 60Hz will never let you see more than 60 FPS, no matter how powerful your GPU is.

10. Manage Storage Space

A nearly full SSD slows down dramatically, especially for writes. If your system drive has less than 15–20% free space, performance suffers across the board, including frame times in games that stream assets.

Uninstall games you no longer play, move large media files to another drive, and empty the recycle bin and Downloads folder. Run Disk Cleanup to remove temporary files.

11. Keep the System Clean and Cool

Thermal throttling is one of the most common causes of frame rate drops over long sessions. Dust buildup in fans and heatsinks reduces cooling efficiency, causing the CPU and GPU to slow down as they heat up.

Every few months, power down your system, open the case, and use compressed air to clear dust from fans, heatsinks, and vents. For laptops, a cooling pad can help, though it is not a substitute for internal cleaning.

12. Consider a Clean Install

If your Windows installation has been upgraded many times over several years, it may carry accumulated clutter — old drivers, orphaned services, registry bloat. A clean install of Windows can restore performance, but it is a significant time investment and should be a last resort.

Back up everything first, create installation media with the Windows Media Creation Tool, and reinstall. You will need to reinstall your games and applications, so weigh the benefit against the effort.

Measure Your Results

After applying the changes that make sense for your setup, re-run your tests:

  • Run the browser FPS test to confirm your display and system are working together at the target refresh rate.
  • Replay the same scene in your target game with the overlay enabled and compare the new average FPS, 1% lows, and frame time variance to your baseline.

You do not need to apply every tweak on this list. Pick the ones that target your specific symptoms — stutters, low average FPS, frame drops over time — and measure the effect of each. The combination of Game Mode, a high performance power plan, current drivers, and a clean background usually captures most of the available improvement.
